Why doesn't ChatGPT recommend my business? A US fix list
Short answer: When ChatGPT skips a local business, the cause is often a vague website, a blocked crawler, or thin or inconsistent listings. Two large studies found most local citations come from a business’s own website and listings, not Reddit. So check that OAI-SearchBot is allowed, state your services, towns and license plainly on the site, get your Bing, Google and industry listings right, then test real customer questions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot every month.
Picture a family-run roofing company in Raleigh, North Carolina. This is a hypothetical, but the scene will be familiar. The owner types “best roofer near me” into ChatGPT, half hoping and half dreading. Three competitors come back by name. The owner’s own company, with years of good work and a full calendar, is nowhere.
The instinct is to chase a trick: seeding Reddit threads, buying an “AI SEO” package, or hunting for the right prompt wording. The evidence points somewhere duller and more useful. For the wider picture, see our guide to SEO, AEO and GEO in the US.
What are Americans actually asking these assistants?
Start with who is using what, because it decides where your effort goes.
Pew Research Center’s 2026 survey of 5,119 US adults, fielded in February 2026, found that about half of US adults now use AI chatbots and about four in ten use them to search for information. Among the specific tools, 44% said they use ChatGPT (up from 34% in 2025, though Pew reworded its question, so that is not a like-for-like comparison), 24% Gemini, 17% Copilot and 14% Meta AI. Adults under 50 were about twice as likely as those 50 and older to use ChatGPT (57% versus 28%).
Notice who is missing. Perplexity was not among the chatbots Pew listed. It is a small US audience next to ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot. Google’s AI Mode also rolled out to all US Search users, announced at Google I/O in May 2025, and our guide to ranking in Google AI Overviews covers that side. This article is about the assistants where a customer types a question and expects a named answer.
Where AI answers really get their local picks
Two big independent looks at citations agree on the main point.
BrightLocal ran 800 manual local searches in ChatGPT across 20 business types in 20 US cities in November 2024, recording the first ten sources for each. Business websites made up 58% of sources and business mentions 27%. Directories were 15%. Forum results were 0%. Within directories, Three Best Rated led with 24%, then Expertise at 18% and Tripadvisor at 8%. Yelp, Facebook and Google Maps did not appear as directory sources in that study. It is a late-2024 snapshot, so results may have shifted.
Yext analyzed 6.8 million AI citations from ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity between July and August 2025. First-party websites were 44% of citations, listings 42%, reviews and social 8%, and Reddit and similar forums 2%. In all, 86% came from sources a brand controls or manages. Two caveats. That dataset covers locations worldwide, not only the US, across four industries (retail, financial services, healthcare and food service). And Yext sells listings-management software, so it has an interest in this finding. It is still a large dataset, and it lines up with BrightLocal.
Yext also saw differences between models: Gemini favored websites (52.1%), OpenAI leaned on listings (48.7%), and Perplexity spread across sources including MapQuest and Tripadvisor. For unbranded factual questions, the kind that do not name a business, first-party websites and local pages made up nearly 60% of citations.
The takeaway: most of what an answer draws on is the website and listings you already control.
Why Reddit is probably not your problem
BrightLocal found 0% of its recorded sources were forum results, and Yext put forums at about 2%.
It is not zero. In Damian Rollison’s Search Engine Land tests of how ChatGPT handles local searches, the sources cited for a Brooklyn dry cleaner query included city guides, business websites, Reddit and Yelp. So a thread can show up. It just is not where effort pays first. A month of community posts while your service pages say “quality work, fair prices” gets the order backwards.
ChatGPT reads the web through Bing, so start there
This is time-sensitive, so treat it as what independent tests found in 2024 and 2025, not a permanent rule.
Rollison’s side-by-side tests found ChatGPT pulling web results from Bing’s index (the integration dates from fall 2024) but reorganizing them with its own logic, so its picks did not match Bing’s order. BrightLocal likewise described ChatGPT search as mostly powered by Bing’s index in late 2024. Part of Rollison’s method involved asking ChatGPT about its own process, so treat the details as indicative. His testing also suggested ChatGPT did not read Bing Places profile data directly. But Bing Places can still help indirectly, because a strong Bing local listing tends to lift your website in Bing’s web results. OpenAI’s own help center says ChatGPT search can partner with third-party search providers and rewrites your question into targeted queries. It uses your general location from your IP address, and may share location with trusted providers for local information such as nearby business listings. Its example: “good restaurants near me” from the San Francisco area may become “top restaurants San Francisco”.
So the practical steps are short:
- Claim and complete your Bing Places for Business listing.
- Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and confirm your pages are indexed.
- Name your city and neighborhoods on the pages, because the rewritten query often will.
The robots.txt line that quietly removes you from ChatGPT
If one setting is going to explain a total absence, it is this.
OpenAI’s crawler documentation says OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT’s search features. Sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. GPTBot is a separate crawler used for training. The settings are independent: you can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours after a robots.txt change for search to adjust.
A file that welcomes the search crawler looks like this:
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
Many owners never wrote their robots.txt. A developer, a plugin or a host set it, sometimes with a blanket block added during a redesign. Ask whoever built your site to read it with you, and ask whether a firewall or CDN bot-protection setting is turning crawlers away first, which does the same damage. Perplexity runs its own crawler, so check its documentation for the current name. Our free SEO audit tool gives you a quick look at crawlability.
Make your website say the specific things an answer can lift
An assistant writing “Smith Roofing serves Raleigh and Cary and is licensed” has to find those facts somewhere. If your site only says “serving the Triangle with pride”, there is nothing to quote.
Put these in plain text, not just in images or PDFs:
- Each service by name, one page per major service (roof replacement, storm repair, gutter work).
- The towns and neighborhoods you actually serve.
- Your license number, where your trade is licensed.
- Hours, phone number and address, written the same way everywhere.
- Prices or price ranges, only if you already publish them.
- LocalBusiness schema, the structured data that labels these facts for machines.
Every statement should be a fact you could defend to a customer, so do not let a writing tool invent credentials or service areas. Our piece on AI marketing for small business covers why AI-written claims need a human check. For review rules, category choice and Google profile work, local SEO for US small business owns that ground.
Which listings matter for your kind of business
“Listings” depends on what you sell.
- Everyone: Google Business Profile, Bing Places for Business and Apple Business Connect are the free listings each platform’s own maps run on. Keep name, address and phone identical across them and your website.
- Contractors and home services: BrightLocal’s directory sources included Thumbtack, Angi and BBB, alongside Yellowpages. A roofer should check each one for accuracy.
- Clinics and healthcare: Healthgrades appeared in BrightLocal’s list, and in Yext’s data listings were 52.6% of healthcare citations, driven by WebMD, Vitals and industry directories.
- Restaurants and cafes: Yext found reviews and social made up 13.3% of food service citations and listings 41.6%. Tripadvisor showed up in BrightLocal’s data. Perplexity integrated Yelp’s local business data in 2024, with restaurants and cafes as the leading examples, so check what is current.
A handful of listings that are right beats fifty that disagree.
ChatGPT has ads now. They do not buy the answer
In January 2026, OpenAI announced it would start testing ads in the US for logged-in adults on the free and Go tiers. The ads sit at the bottom of an answer when a relevant sponsored product or service matches the conversation, clearly labeled and separated from the answer. OpenAI’s wording: “Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you.” Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans do not include ads, and ads are not eligible near sensitive topics such as health or politics. This began as a test, so check current availability.
The point for you: an ad is a paid slot beside the answer, not a recommendation inside it. Be wary of anyone promising guaranteed AI placement. Nobody outside the model controls the answer.
Fix these two things before any of this
If you have no website, or one that is a single page with a phone number, build that first. If your Google Business Profile is unclaimed or half-filled, fix it before anything above. Every other step builds on those.
A monthly check you can run in 20 minutes
You cannot fix what you have not looked at. Once a month, set aside roughly 20 minutes. That time is a suggestion, not a benchmark.
- Write 8 to 10 questions a real customer would type, with your city in them (“roof leak repair Raleigh”, “who does emergency tree removal near me”, “is [your company] licensed”).
- Ask each in ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot, logged out or in a private window where possible.
- Record who is named and which sources are cited.
- Where a competitor wins, open the source it cited. Fix the source, not the answer: improve your page or listing so you can appear there too.
- Keep a simple spreadsheet with the date, question, assistant, businesses named and sources.
Answers vary from run to run, so look for patterns, not a single result. For Google’s side, see tracking AI Overviews citations. Our SEO, AEO and GEO service covers the whole plan, and you can start with a free audit.
Frequently asked questions
Do ChatGPT ads mean a business can buy its way into the answer?
No. OpenAI said when it announced US ad tests that ads sit at the bottom of an answer, are clearly labeled and are separated from it, and that ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives. An ad is a paid slot beside the answer, not a recommendation inside it. Check current availability, because this began as a test and may change.
Does Reddit matter for getting recommended by ChatGPT?
A little, but it is not where to start. BrightLocal’s 2024 test of 800 local searches found no forum results among the first ten sources, and Yext’s 2025 data put Reddit and similar forums at about 2% of citations. Independent testing has seen Reddit cited in some local answers, so it is not zero. Fix your website and listings first.
Is Bing really relevant to ChatGPT results?
In tests from late 2024 and 2025, yes. BrightLocal and Search Engine Land’s Damian Rollison both found ChatGPT search drawing on Bing’s web index, though it reorders the results its own way. Claiming Bing Places, using Bing Webmaster Tools and checking that your site is indexed in Bing is cheap insurance. This may have changed since, so retest.
Should a small business bother with Perplexity?
Do the basics that help every assistant first. Pew’s 2026 survey of US adults did not even list Perplexity, while 44% said they use ChatGPT, 24% Gemini and 17% Copilot. Perplexity runs its own crawler and integrated Yelp data in 2024, so keep your site open to it and your Yelp page accurate. Beyond that, it is not the priority.
Does blocking GPTBot keep my business out of ChatGPT search?
No. OpenAI documents GPTBot as a separate crawler used for training, and OAI-SearchBot as the one that surfaces sites in ChatGPT search. Each setting is independent, so you can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot. Blocking OAI-SearchBot is what keeps you out of search answers. OpenAI says changes can take about 24 hours to take effect.
Will an AI SEO agency get my business into ChatGPT faster?
Not in any way you can count on. No one controls what ChatGPT says, and the sources behind its answers are mostly your own site and listings, which any competent provider or you can fix. Be wary of anyone who guarantees placement. A good agency will show you what it changed and how it tests the questions your customers ask.
