How much does SEO cost in India? Price the work, not keywords

Nexiiom Team··11 min read

Short answer: Most Indian SEO packages are priced by keyword count and backlink totals, sometimes with a “top 10 guaranteed” line thrown in, and that unit hides more than it reveals. Budget roughly Rs 15,000 to Rs 40,000 a month for competent local SEO, Rs 40,000 to Rs 1,50,000 for a competitive category or several cities, and Rs 1,50,000 upward for a large ecommerce catalogue or a national brand, plus 18 percent GST. The better question is not how many keywords you are buying, it is what work gets done for that money.

Search for an SEO quote in India and the proposal in your inbox usually reads like a grocery list: fifty keywords, a hundred backlinks a month, a promise to get you into the top ten. It looks specific and tells you almost nothing about what anyone will do. For languages, WhatsApp and AI search, see our guide to SEO, AEO and GEO in India; this article stays on price.

Why Indian SEO gets sold like a grocery list

A keyword-count package is easy to sell because it is easy to explain on a call: fifty keywords, a monthly report showing where each sits. It is also cheap to deliver, since nothing forces those fifty keywords to be the ones that bring in customers rather than the ones easiest to move.

A backlink count works the same way. A hundred links a month sounds substantial until you learn most come from directory listings and web 2.0 pages built purely to host a link, carrying little authority of their own to pass on. The report looks busy. Busy is not the same as useful.

What Google itself says about guarantees

Google’s own Search Central page on hiring an SEO is blunt about this: no one can guarantee a number one ranking on Google. The same page tells you to be wary of an SEO who claims a special relationship with Google or advertises a “priority submit” to it. Rankings come from Google’s systems, not from anyone’s arrangement with them, so a promise about position is a promise about something the seller does not control.

A “top 10 guaranteed” line is a claim about something the person making it cannot deliver, dressed up as confidence. Read Google’s own page on what to check before hiring an SEO before taking a ranking promise at face value. The honest version of that promise is a list of what will get built or fixed, and by when.

What the fee actually buys, page by page

Strip the keyword count away and a competent SEO retainer pays for a shorter list of real things: pages written or rewritten, technical problems found and fixed, a Google Business Profile kept current with hours, photos and posts, a process for asking customers for reviews, and content in whichever languages your customers actually search in. None of that shows up neatly as a number, which is why the keyword count survives as the easy shorthand. Ask a proposal to name the pages it will touch this month and the issues it will fix, and you find out quickly whether there is a real plan underneath the number.

As a rough national guide: keyword-count packages and volume shops run about Rs 5,000 to Rs 20,000 a month. Competent local SEO for one location or a small business, through a domestic agency, runs Rs 15,000 to Rs 40,000. Competitive categories such as real estate, healthcare, education or finance, or several cities at once, typically sit between Rs 40,000 and Rs 1,50,000. A large ecommerce catalogue, a national brand or an export-focused agency starts around Rs 1,50,000 a month and climbs from there. Most figures are quoted before 18 percent GST; our guide to digital marketing costs in India covers TDS and management-fee structures. A technical audit with fixes is often sold separately, commonly quoted as tens of thousands of rupees rather than folded into the retainer.

Adding Hindi or Tamil does not double your bill

A common assumption is that a second language roughly doubles the cost of an SEO programme, since it looks like building the whole site twice. It rarely works that way.

A site’s technical foundation, its structure, speed and readability for search engines, mostly stays the same no matter how many languages sit on top of it. What genuinely increases with each language is content: writing, or properly reviewing a translation of, the pages that language’s searchers need.

A Hindi or Tamil version alongside English adds a real, ongoing cost tied to how much content gets produced, not a second full programme. Adding one regional language means a moderate step up in the monthly fee, with the content line carrying most of that extra cost.

Metro agency or tier-2 agency: the category matters more than the city

Where an agency is based changes its rate card, but not as much as which category you compete in. A metro agency generally charges more than one in a smaller city, since rent and salaries run higher there. Buying from a cheaper city works well for a business serving customers online or across a wide area, rather than needing someone to visit in person.

The bigger swing in price comes from how contested your category is where you sell, not where the agency sits. A single-location business with light local competition costs meaningfully less to rank well than a crowded category such as real estate or private healthcare, which needs more content, more technical work and more patience. Local search inside one Indian city can itself split into several markets with different competitive intensity; our local SEO guide for Indore shows what that looks like.

Two budgets, worked through

These are hypothetical examples, built to show what a monthly figure actually buys rather than to describe a real client.

A single-location dental clinic in Vadodara. At roughly Rs 25,000 a month, a realistic scope covers a handful of service pages written properly rather than templated, ongoing technical maintenance, a Google Business Profile kept current with photos and posts, and a simple process for asking happy patients for a review after their visit. Most months the output is small and steady: one or two pages improved, a handful of fixes, a few new reviews. Over six months that builds a site answering what patients actually search for, rather than one chasing keywords nobody typed.

A Bengaluru D2C skincare brand with a few hundred products. At roughly Rs 1.75 lakh a month, the scope looks different: category and product pages written and structured at scale, technical work suited to a large catalogue such as fixing duplicate content across similar products, and content built around the skincare questions customers ask before buying. Our Bengaluru pricing guide covers what pulls the city’s rates above the national norm and where that premium is, and is not, worth paying. Most monthly hours here go into technical and structural work, since that decides whether the catalogue gets found at all.

Reading a proposal before you sign it

A proposal worth signing answers a short list of questions plainly. Which pages get written or fixed this month, and who writes them? Which languages are covered, and by whom? What happens to the backlinks and content if you leave, and who owns the Google Business Profile and the site logins while you are a client?

A few answers should end the conversation: a guaranteed ranking, a claimed special relationship with Google, an offer of “priority” treatment, a headline deliverable that is just a backlink count, or a contract that keeps your Google Business Profile or domain under the agency’s own account rather than yours. These are not aggressive sales tactics. They are signs the person you are about to pay will not tell you what they are actually doing.

Does ranking in AI Overviews cost extra?

Mostly no, and treating it as a separate paid add-on misreads where AI citations come from. Google’s AI Overviews and tools like ChatGPT tend to cite pages that answer a specific question clearly, near the top, with facts that survive being lifted out of context. In practice that is the same page you need for ordinary rankings, built with slightly more discipline about where the answer sits.

A proposal that adds a distinct line item for “AI search optimisation” on top of an already-priced content programme is usually charging twice for one piece of work. Our SEO, AEO and GEO guide for India covers what actually changes for AI visibility, and our SEO, AEO and GEO service is built around that same well-structured page doing both jobs at once.

What to do yourself, and when SEO is the wrong spend

Some of this costs nothing but attention. Fill out your Google Business Profile completely: hours, categories, photos, service areas. Ask satisfied customers for a review while the visit is still fresh. Check the questions customers send you on WhatsApp and make sure your site answers the common ones plainly; our guide to AI lead generation in India covers what happens next.

SEO is also, sometimes, the wrong spend right now. A brand-new business needing customers this month is usually better served by paid ads or a marketplace listing, which can produce a result within days, while SEO typically needs several months to move. Our guide to digital advertising for small businesses in India covers that faster route. SEO earns its cost once you have a working offer and time to let organic visibility compound, not as a first move when revenue is needed immediately.

If a proposal leads with a keyword count or a ranking guarantee, ask for the same scope written as a list of pages, fixes and languages instead, and weigh that against the bands above. Get a free SEO audit and see what your own site actually needs.

Frequently asked questions

How much does SEO cost per month in India?

Volume shops selling by keyword count run roughly Rs 5,000 to Rs 20,000 a month. Competent local SEO for one location or a small business, through a domestic agency, runs Rs 15,000 to Rs 40,000. Competitive categories such as real estate, healthcare, education or finance, or several cities at once, typically sit between Rs 40,000 and Rs 1,50,000. Large ecommerce catalogues, national brands and export-focused agencies start around Rs 1,50,000 and climb from there, all before 18 percent GST.

Can an SEO agency guarantee a first-page ranking?

No. Google’s own Search Central guidance says directly that no one can guarantee a number one ranking on Google, and it warns against anyone claiming a special relationship with Google. An SEO offering a guaranteed rank, or claiming a special relationship with Google, is describing something that does not exist. Treat that claim as a reason to walk away, not a reason to trust the proposal.

Is paying per keyword a good way to buy SEO?

Not really. A per-keyword price tells an agency which words to chase, and the easiest way to hit a keyword count cheaply is to pick easy, low-value keywords and pad the list with directory backlinks that do little for rankings. It says nothing about how many pages get written or fixed, or who maintains your Google Business Profile. Ask for a list of deliverables instead of a keyword count, and price that.

Does SEO in Hindi or a regional language cost more?

It adds cost, but it does not double your bill. Each additional language mainly adds content: research, writing and review in that language, on top of a technical foundation that mostly stays the same across languages. A business adding Tamil or Marathi alongside English should expect a moderate increase tied to how much new content gets written, not a doubling of the whole programme.

Is GST charged on SEO services in India?

Yes, at 18 percent, and most quotes are written before it is added. A GST-registered business can generally claim that 18 percent back as input tax credit, making it a cash flow question rather than a real cost. An unregistered business pays the full amount. Our cost guide for digital marketing in India covers GST and TDS on marketing services in full.

How long should I give an SEO agency before judging it?

Several months, not several weeks. SEO moves through indexing, technical fixes and content publication before rankings and traffic respond, and judging it after one invoice mostly tells you whether the agency communicates well, not whether the work is any good. Ask for a written list of what will be delivered in the first few months, and judge against that.
