Automation
Best marketing automation platforms in India: who can you message?
Short answer: The best marketing automation platform for an Indian SMB is not a brand, it is whichever tool sits closest to the customers you actually captured with consent, whether that is a Shopify store, a WhatsApp opt-in list or a CRM full of IndiaMART enquiries. Marketplace buyers on Amazon or Flipkart usually cannot be automated at all, since the platform owns that relationship, not you. Once you know which list is genuinely yours, choose by language cost, billing currency and where the data sits. The brand shortlist comes last, not first. When you get there, the usual shortlist is Zoho or HubSpot for B2B follow-up, a WhatsApp provider such as Interakt or AiSensy for a marketplace seller building its own list, and a store-connected tool such as Klaviyo for a D2C shop.
Every comparison article starts with a table of platforms and a winner. That works only if a business already owns its customer list, and most Indian SMBs do not, or not fully, because a share of their monthly customers arrived through a channel that keeps the relationship for itself.
This guide starts one step earlier: work out which customers you can legally message, let that decide the category of tool, then let language and billing decide the shortlist inside it. Our guide to marketing automation for small business in India covers DPDP consent wording, DLT registration, the WhatsApp window and the festival calendar in full, so none of that repeats here.
Whose customer is it, really?
A seller with 1,000 monthly Amazon orders does not have 1,000 contacts to automate. Amazon’s buyer-seller messaging rules limit sellers to messages necessary to complete an order, not promotional content, and marketplaces generally do not give sellers buyer contact details for marketing. Read your marketplace’s current seller policy rather than assume otherwise, since rules differ by platform and change over time.
The honest option is capturing the customer into a channel you control, with their own clear consent, at a moment they are willing to give it. An insert card inviting a WhatsApp opt-in is worth testing, provided it is a genuine choice, not a pre-ticked box, and does not conflict with your marketplace’s current policy on parcel inserts, so check that policy first. A D2C site alongside the listing is the more durable version, since every checkout is another chance to ask.
A lead platform enquiry is not a mailing list
The same question shows up differently for a business living on IndiaMART or JustDial enquiries. Answering the enquiry someone sent is one purpose, and doing it well is just good service. Adding that person to a recurring offers broadcast is a separate purpose, and under the DPDP Act it needs its own specific consent, not an inference drawn from the fact that they once asked a question.
This is not a comment on either platform’s product features, only a reminder that an enquiry earns permission to reply, not to market. If you want an ongoing relationship, ask for it plainly in your reply, naming what they will get and how to stop it. See AI lead generation in India on capturing and routing enquiries, and AI voice agents for lead follow-up in India on what happens when many arrive by phone.
Four starting points, four different shortlists
Once you know which contacts are yours, the shortlist narrows, because four common starting points want different things from a platform.
A D2C store on Shopify or similar sees every purchase, so a store-connected email and WhatsApp tool triggering on cart abandonment or a repeat-buy window earns its keep. This is the one case where a dollar-billed tool such as Klaviyo is worth weighing.
A marketplace seller building an own-channel list needs to capture consented contacts first, so a WhatsApp Business Platform provider such as WATI, Interakt or AiSensy paired with a simple storefront matters more than any CRM feature.
A B2B or lead-platform business, manufacturers, distributors and service firms working off IndiaMART or direct enquiries, lives on follow-up discipline, not broadcast reach. A CRM-first tool such as Zoho CRM, Bigin or HubSpot earns its place there.
An appointment or fee-based business such as a clinic, coaching institute or salon often already runs booking or fee software that sends its own reminders. Check what it already does before buying a tool that duplicates it.
Which marketing automation companies should an Indian business look at?
The answer depends on the starting point from the section above, so the list below is grouped by it. It is a shortlist of who to look at, not a ranking. The home-base and currency cells come from each company’s own website as we read it in October 2026, and “Not stated” or “Not shown” means the page we read did not say.
| Company | Home base, per its own site | Rupee pricing on its own site? | Fits which starting point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zoho (Zoho CRM, Bigin, Zoho Campaigns) | Chennai | Yes, bills in rupees | B2B or lead-platform business |
| HubSpot | Boston (global headquarters) | No, US dollars | B2B or lead-platform business |
| Klaviyo | Boston (global headquarters) | No, US dollars | D2C store |
| Interakt | Launched by Jio Haptik, city not stated | Partly: rupees on its Sales CRM plans, dollars on others | Marketplace seller building an own list |
| AiSensy | India, city not stated | Yes | Marketplace seller building an own list |
| WATI | Not stated | No, US dollars | Marketplace seller building an own list |
| WebEngage | Mumbai (headquarters) | Not shown | Enterprise app engagement |
| MoEngage | Not stated | Not shown | Enterprise app engagement |
| CleverTap | Not stated | Dollar sign shown, currency not named | Enterprise app engagement |
Our view, starting with the stores. A D2C shop on Shopify or similar sees every purchase, so a store-connected tool such as Klaviyo is the natural first look, with the dollar billing and the GST point covered further down.
A marketplace seller building an own-channel list needs a WhatsApp Business Platform provider first: Interakt, AiSensy or WATI. All three are built around templates, broadcasts and a shared inbox. Interakt and AiSensy show some or all of their pricing in rupees, which is simpler to budget. For how a WhatsApp flow captures enquiries, see WhatsApp AI chatbots for lead capture in India.
A B2B or lead-platform business lives on follow-up, so look CRM-first: Zoho (Bigin for a small team, Zoho CRM as it grows) or HubSpot. Zoho bills in rupees, HubSpot in dollars. An appointment or fee-based business should check its existing booking or fee software before looking at any company on this list.
WebEngage, MoEngage and CleverTap are enterprise app-engagement platforms, and Netcore sits in the same group. They suit app-heavy, high-volume brands, and in our view most small businesses do not need one yet.
Whichever company you shortlist, put it through the questions in “Before you pay: seven questions for the demo” further down.
What a message costs once it is not in English
Language changes the maths. Plain English SMS fits around 160 characters per billed part. Hindi, Tamil, Marathi and most Indian scripts send as Unicode, fitting roughly 70 characters per part, so the same message can split into two or three billed parts instead of one.
The same multiplication hits approvals. Every language needs its own DLT-registered SMS template and its own WhatsApp template approval, even once the English version is live. A demo showing a clean English template proves nothing about what customers will actually receive. Ask the vendor to show a real, approved template rendering correctly in your customers’ language, on an ordinary low-end Android phone, not the salesperson’s flagship device. Our guide to marketing automation for small business in India covers DLT mechanics and the 24-hour window in full; treat this section as the filter, that one as the how-to.
Rupees on the invoice, or dollars on the card
Zoho is built by the Chennai-based company of the same name and bills in rupees, part of why it shows up on so many Indian shortlists. Many other platforms bill in dollars, so your rupee cost moves with the exchange rate, and cards often add a forex markup on top.
There is a tax layer underneath. If you are GST-registered and the vendor has no Indian GST registration, this is normally an import of services: you self-invoice and pay 18 percent IGST under reverse charge, generally reclaimable as input tax credit, but the reverse-charge tax must be paid in cash rather than from your existing credit balance, so it hits cash flow first. A GST invoice carrying your GSTIN instead makes the credit simpler, with no reverse-charge step. Unregistered, the 18 percent is a straightforward extra cost. Check the billing currency at checkout, and confirm reverse-charge treatment with your accountant before an annual commitment.
Where the data lives, and what to ask about it
The DPDP Act’s cross-border rule, Section 16, is a negative list: sending data abroad is allowed by default, except to any country the government specifically restricts by notification, and as of late September 2026 none has been. Section 16 and most business obligations under the DPDP Rules 2025, notified 14 November 2025, take effect 13 May 2027, with consent manager provisions starting earlier, from 13 November 2026.
None of that bans a US-hosted or EU-hosted platform, but the question is worth asking directly: where is data physically stored, can the vendor export or delete a specific contact’s data on request, and does it log when and how each contact gave and withdrew consent. If your business sits in a regulated sector, for example a payments business covered by RBI’s payment data storage rules, raise that with your compliance adviser rather than treating a platform’s answer as settling it.
Ludhiana wool, Nashik physio: one thesis, two answers
Take two businesses working through the same question. The numbers below are labelled assumptions for illustration, not real client results.
A Ludhiana woollens seller does 70 percent of sales through Amazon, 30 percent through its own website. On Amazon it cannot build a marketing list at all, so platform choice barely matters there beyond service messaging inside Amazon’s rules. Assume 300 website orders a month at ₹1,800 average, giving ₹5,40,000 in website revenue: that side captures consent at checkout, so a store-connected tool with purchase-triggered flows fits, even though most of this seller’s buyers stay outside marketing automation until the website side grows.
A Nashik physiotherapy clinic sits at the opposite end. Assume 40 active patients a month, each already consenting to appointment contact at booking, so every one is already the clinic’s own contact. The question is not how to build a list but whether the booking software already sends reminders on its own. If it does, a separate tool duplicates something already paid for. If not, a CRM-first tool built for appointment cycles fits better than anything aimed at broadcast volume.
Same question, same country, two different answers, because the two businesses do not own the same kind of customer relationship.
The free WhatsApp Business app, and when to stop there
Not every business here needs to buy anything yet. If your consented list runs to a few hundred people, one person answers replies, and templates in more than one language are not yet a factor, the free WhatsApp Business app usually does the job: automated greetings, quick replies, a simple catalogue, at no cost. Pay for something else once a second person needs the same inbox, templates need approval in more than one language, or you need reporting that shows what a message earned rather than just that it sent.
Before you pay: seven questions for the demo
Ask these before signing, not after the first invoice.
- How do you log consent, and can you show one contact’s record now?
- Does a WhatsApp STOP also stop SMS and email, or per channel?
- Which languages do you support, shown on a basic Android phone?
- GST invoice with my GSTIN, or reverse charge on my side?
- Can you export or delete a contact’s data, and how fast?
- Who approves new templates, your team or mine, and how long does that take?
- What does this cost in rupees at double my list size, in two years?
A vendor answering all seven clearly is worth a look regardless of brand. One that talks around two or three is telling you something about the account you would be signing up for.
Frequently asked questions
Which are the best marketing automation companies in India? There is no single best, because it depends on your starting point. Zoho and HubSpot suit B2B follow-up on enquiries. Interakt, AiSensy and WATI are WhatsApp providers for sellers building their own list. Klaviyo fits a D2C store that sees every purchase. MoEngage, CleverTap and WebEngage are enterprise app-engagement platforms most small businesses do not need yet. The right one depends on which customers you can actually message.
Can I run marketing automation on the contacts I only have inside Amazon or Flipkart? Generally no. Amazon’s buyer-seller messaging rules limit sellers to messages necessary to complete an order, not promotional content, and marketplaces do not typically hand buyer contact details to sellers for marketing. Check your marketplace’s current seller policy first. The workable path is capturing the customer into your own channel, with clear consent, once they have already bought from you.
What is the difference between replying to an IndiaMART enquiry and adding someone to a broadcast list? Replying to answer the question someone asked is one purpose, and it needs no separate consent beyond the enquiry itself. Adding that same person to a monthly offers list is a different purpose under the DPDP Act, and it needs its own specific, clear consent from the customer, not an assumption that enquiring once means agreeing to ongoing marketing.
Does an SMS in Hindi or Tamil cost more to send than one in English? Often yes. Plain English SMS fits about 160 characters per message part, but Hindi, Tamil, Marathi and most Indian scripts send as Unicode, which fits roughly 70 characters per part. The same message can split into two or three billed parts instead of one, and each language also needs its own DLT-approved template before it can send at all.
Do I owe GST if I pay a US-based marketing automation company from India? Usually yes, treated as an import of services if the vendor has no Indian GST registration: you self-invoice and pay 18 percent IGST under reverse charge, generally reclaimable as input tax credit, but payable in cash rather than out of your existing credit ledger. Confirm the exact mechanics with your accountant.
Is it legal to use a US-hosted marketing platform for Indian customer data? Yes, at present. The DPDP Act’s cross-border transfer rule is a negative list: transfers abroad are allowed unless the government has restricted a specific country by notification, and as of September 2026 none has been notified. This is not legal advice, so ask the vendor where the data sits and whether it can export or delete a contact on request.
How many contacts do I need before a paid marketing automation tool makes sense? There is no fixed number, but a few hundred consented contacts handled by one person replying manually is often still fine on the free WhatsApp Business app. Paying tends to make sense once template approvals, multiple languages, a shared inbox, or broadcast reporting start to matter more than the subscription itself.
None of this is legal or tax advice. Confirm consent wording, GST treatment and data handling with a qualified adviser or accountant before relying on any of it.
