Local SEO in India: why your address is the first thing to fix

Nexiiom Team··12 min read

Short answer: In India, local SEO is an address-and-identity job before it is a ranking job. Most small businesses missing from the map have a profile Google cannot verify or a location a customer cannot find, and keywords fix neither. Write the address the way Google allows, pass verification, which may mean a video, keep your real name, put WhatsApp on the profile, then ask every customer for an honest review, offering nothing in return.

You run a clinic, a salon, a coaching centre, a repair shop or a restaurant, and you are not on the map. The usual advice is to add keywords. That is rarely the problem.

Usually Google cannot confirm you exist where you say, or a customer cannot work out how to reach your door. For the wider picture, including languages, Justdial and IndiaMART, and voice search, read SEO, AEO and GEO in India. This guide stays on the Google map listing.

Why a good Indian business still goes missing on the map

In our experience the causes are few: an unverified or suspended profile, a pin in the wrong lane, an address nobody can follow, a stuffed name, a home business showing an address it should hide, or a virtual office.

Google’s local ranking help page says local results rest mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that “There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.” An unverified or unfindable profile never gets as far as being ranked.

Many customers also look on Justdial, which our India SEO guide covers. To check your website, try our free SEO audit tool. For overall costs, see digital marketing costs in India.

”Opposite the temple” is allowed, and Google says so

Indian addresses often come with plot numbers out of order, lanes with no name board, new layouts and one building with three names. So people say “near”, “behind” and “opposite”.

Google’s Business Profile guidelines allow for this: “Only include information like cross-streets and nearby landmarks in regions where the official street address doesn’t accurately pinpoint the business’s location.” Google does not name India. But where the official address alone does not reach the door, a landmark line is permitted. A business on a well-numbered main road does not need one.

Here is an invented example of one address written three ways.

LineWorks because / Fails because
Plot 42, Sector 7 Road, Alkapuri, Vadodara. Opposite the temple, above Shree Pharmacy.Works because the official address comes first, then one landmark a stranger can see.
Plot 42, Sector 7 Road, Alkapuri. Best dental clinic, cheap, near everything.Fails because it puts a sales pitch in the address and gives no usable landmark.
Near the temple, Alkapuri.Fails because there is no official address to match.

Write the address the same way on your profile, your website and every listing.

Some cities add their own collisions: our Noida guide covers sector numbering, and our Chandigarh local SEO guide covers a tricity under three administrations.

Add a Plus Code a delivery rider can follow

A landmark helps a person. A Plus Code helps a rider or a courier. Google Maps help describes it as a way to “Get and use a simple digital address”, for example JJXX+HR8, Seattle.

To find yours, open Google Maps, touch and hold to drop a pin on the spot, tap the panel, then tap the Plus Code to copy it. Our advice: drop the pin on the actual entrance, then paste the code into your website contact page, your WhatsApp auto-reply and your delivery instructions. It does not improve ranking. Its job is to get the customer to your door.

Expect to verify on video, and plan the walk-through

Google’s verification help page lists phone or text, email, video and postcard by mail. It says: “Verification methods are automatically determined by Google and can’t be changed.” Many owners report being offered video.

For video, Google asks you to show “outside signs, nearby businesses, or a street sign that confirms your business location”, the “products, branded equipment, marketing materials, or tools you use to serve customers”, and proof you run the place, such as “a cash register, kitchen, storage room, or non-sensitive business documents”. Google says verification reviews take up to 5 business days.

Our advice for the walk-through:

  1. Put the name board up before you record.
  2. Start outside, so the street and neighbours are visible.
  3. Walk in without cutting the video.
  4. Open something only staff can open, such as a storeroom or a till.
  5. Keep sensitive documents out of frame.

Do a dry run first.

The name on your board is the name on your profile

Google’s guidelines say: “Your name should reflect your business’s real-world name, as used consistently on your storefront, website, stationery, and as known to customers.” They add: “Including unnecessary information in your business name isn’t permitted, and could result in the suspension of your Business Profile.”

A clinic called Smile Care should not appear as “Smile Care Best Dentist in Vadodara”. That belongs in your category and services.

If you go to the customer, hide the address and name the areas

Plumbers and AC repair crews often run from a flat. Google is direct: “If you’re a service-area business, you should hide your business address from customers.” Its example is a plumber working from a residential address, who clears the address from the profile. You then list the areas you serve.

Two more limits. “P.O. boxes or mailboxes located at remote locations aren’t acceptable.” And a virtual office, a rented mailing address the business does not operate from, “isn’t eligible for a Business Profile”. If customers do visit your home, for tuition, you can show the address.

Put WhatsApp on the profile, where Google now lets you

Google’s note on chat says: “As of July 31, 2024, the chat and call history features are no longer available in your Business Profile.” In their place, the same note says, “For eligible accounts, customers can contact you from your Business Profile through text messages or WhatsApp.”

The steps, from Google’s chat setup page: Edit profile, Contact, then next to Chat select Edit. Choose WhatsApp or Text message, add your WhatsApp click to chat URL or a phone number that can receive texts, and Save.

Google warns that “Chat options are currently available for select regions and might not be available for your Business Profile.” And “If you add both options, only the text message option will be shown to customers.” So add WhatsApp only. If the option is missing, put the link on your website.

This does not affect ranking. Messages that follow still need the customer’s permission, and our India SEO guide covers the DPDP side.

Ask every customer for a review, and offer nothing for it

Google’s review guidance says: “To leave reviews, you can ask customers to visit a Google link or scan a QR code.” It also draws a hard line: “Offering incentives, like free or discounted goods or services, in exchange for customers to post reviews, change reviews, or remove negative reviews is considered fake & misleading content and is strictly prohibited.”

Google adds that “A mix of positive and negative feedback often feels more trustworthy.” So no “post a review, get a free scan” offers, however small. What we suggest:

  • Print the QR code at the counter and on the bill.
  • Ask when the customer is pleased, and ask everyone, not only the happy ones.
  • Reply to every review, politely and briefly, including the bad ones, in the language it was written in.

What India’s review standard means for a shop that only asks

On 21 November 2022 the Department of Consumer Affairs launched Indian Standard IS 19000:2022 on collecting, moderating and publishing online consumer reviews. The Press Information Bureau release says it applies to “every online platform which publishes consumer reviews” and “will initially be voluntary”. In May 2024 the Department said it “seeks to mandate” the standard through a draft Quality Control Order, with proposed bans on editing reviews “to alter their message” and on discouraging “people from submitting negative reviews”. We could not confirm a final order at the time of writing, so check the current position.

The standard is written for organisations that collect, moderate and publish reviews: mainly platforms, and also a business that publishes customer reviews on its own website. A shop that simply asks customers to review it on Google is governed day to day by Google’s policy, and Google can remove reviews that break it.

If you show testimonials on your own site, publish the unflattering ones too and do not edit them. That is where the rules are heading. This is not legal advice.

A Vadodara dental clinic’s first month (hypothetical)

This example is invented for illustration. Picture a two-chair dental clinic in Vadodara, above a pharmacy, on a road whose official address is a plot number. The owner works through this order:

  1. Week 1: fix the pin and address. Move the pin to the entrance. Add the landmark line “Above the pharmacy, opposite the temple”. Paste the Plus Code into the website.
  2. Week 2: verify. Record from the street, showing neighbouring shops and the board, then walk in, show the chair and open the locked steriliser cabinet. Keep patient files out of frame.
  3. Week 3: fix the name and categories. Remove “Best Dentist” from the name. Set the category and add each service.
  4. Week 4: add WhatsApp, then ask. Add the WhatsApp link. Print a QR code for reception and ask every patient for an honest review. Offer nothing for it.

At day 30 the owner checks three things. Is the profile verified? Can a first-time patient reach the door from the listing alone? How many WhatsApp chats and calls came from the profile? The profile’s own performance report shows calls, direction requests and website clicks, and the chats are counted in WhatsApp itself.

Who should not start here

Local SEO should wait if:

  • You have no fixed place and no defined service area. Google has nothing to verify.
  • You sell only online. Your website and a marketplace listing matter more than a map pin.
  • You cannot answer WhatsApp or the phone in working hours. Missed enquiries do harm.
  • You are about to move premises. Move first, then verify.

You do not need to pay an agency for any step above. If you want help, pricing is covered in what SEO costs in India. Our SEO, AEO and GEO service is the paid route, and we are an agency, so we have an interest.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a landmark in my Google Business Profile address in India? Yes, where the official address does not pinpoint your location. Google’s guidelines allow cross-streets and nearby landmarks only in regions where the street address alone cannot find the business, which in our experience describes many Indian localities. Use one short line such as ‘Opposite the temple, above the pharmacy’. If you are on a clearly numbered main road, you do not need one. Write the address identically on your profile, website and listings.

Why is Google asking me for a video to verify my business? Google decides the verification method automatically and you cannot change it. Phone, text, email, postcard and video are all possible, and many owners report being offered video. Google wants to see your signage, the street and neighbours, your equipment or products, and proof that you run the place, such as a cash register or a storeroom. Review takes up to 5 business days after you submit.

Can I add my WhatsApp number to my Google Business Profile? For eligible accounts, yes. In your profile choose Edit profile, then Contact, then Edit next to Chat, and pick WhatsApp or text message. Add your WhatsApp click to chat link. Google says chat is available only in select regions, so you may not see the option. If you add both, only the text message option is shown, so add WhatsApp alone if that is where you reply.

Is it legal to offer a discount for a Google review in India? Do not do it. Google treats free or discounted goods or services offered in exchange for reviews as fake and misleading content and strictly prohibits it, and Google can remove reviews that break its policies. India also has a review standard, voluntary when launched, that the government has said it wants to make mandatory. This is not legal advice. The safe route is to ask every customer honestly and offer nothing in return.

Should I add keywords or my city to my business name on Google? No. Google says your name should match your real-world name as used on your storefront, website and stationery, and that unnecessary information in the name is not permitted and could get your profile suspended. ‘Best Dentist in Vadodara’ on a board that reads ‘Smile Care’ is a risk. Put that information in your category and services fields, where it belongs.

I run my business from home. What address do I show? If customers do not visit you at home, hide the address. Google says service-area businesses should hide their address from customers, and gives the example of a plumber working from a residential address clearing it from the profile. Then list the areas you serve. If customers do come to your home, such as for tuition, you can show the address and set real opening hours.
