AEO for small businesses in India: answer in the language of the question
Short answer: AEO, or answer engine optimisation, means shaping your pages so search engines and AI assistants can quote a plain answer and name you. Google says no special optimisation is needed beyond normal SEO, and AI Overviews now run in Hindi and other Indian languages. For a small business here, the work is a short checklist, answers written in the customer’s language, one crawler setting to check, and proof behind every claim.
Most AEO advice is written for English-only markets. In India, customers ask in many languages, and India has its own rules on misleading advertising claims.
This page sits under our India guide to SEO, AEO and GEO. The plain definitions are in SEO, AEO and GEO explained.
AI Overviews now answer in Hindi and other Indian languages
Google’s help page, Find information in faster & easier ways with AI Overviews in Google Search, names India among the countries where AI Overviews are available. It also lists the languages. Alongside English, the list includes Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.
The help page carries no date, and we read it on 13 October 2026. We are not giving a count of languages, and we cannot say when each one was added. Check it again before you plan around a language.
Google also says these overviews show up when its systems judge that generative AI would be especially helpful, and that a searcher cannot switch the feature off.
What Google says you need: nothing extra
Google’s page for site owners, AI features and your website, last updated on 10 December 2025, says you need no additional requirements, no extra technical requirements and no special optimisation to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. On markup it is blunt: “There’s also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add.”
It recommends the usual groundwork: let crawlers in, including at the CDN and host, link your pages together, keep important content in text, and keep structured data and your Business Profile matching the page.
Google reports appearances in AI features inside Search Console, in the Performance report under the Web search type. We found no separate AI report described on the page.
Which language should the answer be in?
This is our view, not a rule from Google. A parent who phones in Hindi, a trader who writes in Gujarati and a company buyer who emails in English are three different readers, and each should get an answer in their own language. Our India guide covers multilingual search and voice search, so we do not repeat them.
Three rules. Have someone who speaks the language to customers every day write each version natively, because a tool-translated page carries claims nobody has checked in the second language. Give each language its own page for the same ten questions, not a button on the English page. Keep the name, address, phone number and fees identical across versions.
Begin with the language of most of your calls and messages.
The checklist for an Indian small business
| Job | Why it matters here | How to check it |
|---|---|---|
| Confirm your pages are indexed and can show a snippet | A page Google has not indexed cannot be quoted in any language | Check the Pages report in Search Console |
| Make sure robots.txt, your CDN and your host let crawlers in | Old security settings can block visitors you want | Open yourdomain/robots.txt, then ask your host what else filters traffic |
| List the ten questions customers ask by phone | Customers ask in their own words, often in Hindi or another language | Ask whoever answers the phone to write them down |
| Turn each question into a heading with a two-sentence answer | A short answer under a matching heading is easy to lift | Do the first two sentences answer the question alone? |
| Keep answers, fees and timings in text | Text locked inside a banner or a scanned PDF is easy for an assistant to miss | Try selecting the text with your cursor |
| Put your phone and WhatsApp number in text | A number inside a graphic cannot be copied | Copy it from the page on your mobile |
| Write fees in rupees in a plain sentence | Customers ask what it costs early | Search the page for the word fee and the rupee sign |
| Give each language its own page for the same ten questions | Each language page can be indexed and quoted on its own | List your URLs by language and compare the question sets |
| Keep structured data and your Google Business Profile in step with the page | Mismatched details weaken the page and confuse customers | Compare markup and profile with the visible text |

A claim in an answer is still a claim you must prove
Direct answers get lifted and repeated, so a boast inside an answer travels far. We are not lawyers. This is general information, not legal advice.
The CCPA Guidelines
The Press Information Bureau, for the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, issued a release on 10 June 2022 titled Centre issues Guidelines on Prevention of Misleading Advertisements and Endorsements for Misleading Advertisements, 2022. It says the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), under the Department of Consumer Affairs, notified the Guidelines under section 18 of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
The release states their purpose: “The guidelines seek to ensure that consumers are not being fooled with unsubstantiated claims, exaggerated promises, misinformation and false claims.” It adds that “Misleading advertisement has already been defined under section 2(28) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.”
On disclaimers, a disclaimer “shall not attempt to hide material information with respect to any claim made in such advertisement” and “shall not attempt to correct a misleading claim made in an advertisement.” Also: “a disclaimer shall be in the same language as the claim made in the advertisement and the font used in a disclaimer shall be the same as that used in the claim.”
On penalties: “CCPA can impose penalty of upto 10 lakh rupees on manufacturers, advertisers and endorsers for any misleading advertisements. For subsequent contraventions, CCPA may impose a penalty of upto 50 lakh rupees.”
Here is what we could not confirm. The release does not say whether a sentence on a business’s own service page counts as an advertisement. We also could not open the Guidelines’ full text or the Act on the government sites when we tried on 13 October 2026. So we are not saying how the CCPA would treat any particular page.
The ASCI Code
The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) is a self-regulatory body. Its page, The ASCI Code, carries a chairman’s note dated 10 July 2025. It says: “Advertisements must be truthful.” It also says: “All descriptions, claims and comparisons, which relate to matters of objectively ascertainable fact, should be capable of substantiation.”
The Code’s definition of an advertisement starts from a “paid-for communication” and also includes communication “owned or authorised by the advertiser or their advertising agency.” Its definition of media includes “internet, digital etc.” The page does not name a business’s own website, so we are not claiming it does.
Our practical rule, which is opinion: state facts you can show proof for, such as years of operation, registrations or a fee list, and keep opinion looking like opinion. A Hindi answer with an English-only disclaimer is the pattern to avoid.
ChatGPT’s search crawler, and the separate one for training
OpenAI’s Overview of OpenAI Crawlers, which we read on 13 October 2026, describes crawlers with different jobs. OAI-SearchBot is the one used to surface websites in ChatGPT’s search features. If a site opts out of it, OpenAI says the site will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though it can still appear as navigational links.
GPTBot belongs to training. OpenAI says: “Disallowing GPTBot indicates a site’s content should not be used in training generative AI foundation models.” A third crawler, ChatGPT-User, is not used to decide whether content appears in Search.
Our view: if you want enquiries, allow the search crawler. Training is a separate decision.
An Indore coaching institute, worked through
This is a hypothetical, not a client: a coaching institute in Indore that prepares students for competitive entrance exams. It is invented, so there is no result to report.
Before, the fees and batch timings sit inside banner images. The home page claims the best results in Indore, with nothing behind it. Every page is in English, though parents ask in Hindi. Nobody has checked robots.txt.
After, the owners list the ten questions parents ask on the phone. Examples: the fee, when each batch meets, how many students sit in a batch. Each question becomes a heading, once in Hindi and once in English, with a two-sentence answer beneath it. The Hindi is written natively, not translated from the English. The fees and batch timings move into plain sentences. The best results claim goes, replaced by what the institute can prove: how many years it has run, the qualifications of its faculty and its batch size. Any disclaimer sits in the same language as the claim it qualifies. The phone and WhatsApp numbers are typed out in text. The owners check robots.txt and ask their host what else is blocked.
What would they watch next, with no promise of what happens? Whether the pages are indexed in both languages, whether the institute is named when the same ten questions are put to the assistants in each, and whether callers start to refer to the answers.
What we would leave out of the budget
This is our opinion.
- Anything sold as a guaranteed place in AI answers. Google says AI Overviews appear when its systems judge them helpful, so no vendor can guarantee one.
- Markup bought as if AI features demanded it. Google’s own page says no special schema.org structured data is needed.
- A whole site machine-translated in one go. You would publish unchecked claims in several languages at once.
- Louder claims. An unproven boast is what the guidelines above are aimed at, and it gives an assistant nothing solid to quote.

Measuring it without waiting for clicks
Clicks are a poor guide here, because Google describes no separate AI report. In India the better signals arrive by phone and WhatsApp.
Ask every new caller and WhatsApp enquirer how they found you, and note the answer and the language they used in one shared sheet. Add the same question to your enquiry form.
Once a month, put the same ten questions to the assistants in each language you publish in, and write down who is named.
If more callers mention an answer, the work is probably paying. If you want a hand, that is what our SEO, AEO and GEO service is for.
Frequently asked questions
What is AEO for a small business in India?
AEO, or answer engine optimisation, is the work of making your pages easy for search engines and AI assistants to quote when they answer a question. Google says AI Overviews need no special optimisation beyond normal SEO. For an Indian small business, that means a short checklist, answers in the language customers ask in, one crawler setting to check, and a way to prove each claim.
Do AI Overviews work in Hindi and other Indian languages?
Yes, in the languages Google lists on its AI Overviews help page, which names India as an available country. Besides English, the list includes Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. That page carries no date, and we read it on 13 October 2026. Check it again before you plan around one language.
Do I need special schema markup to appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google’s page for site owners says there is no special schema.org structured data that you need to add, and no extra technical requirements, to appear in AI features. It does say that any structured data you use should match the visible text. Spend your effort on clear answers in plain text before you spend it on markup.
Can a claim in an answer on my website be treated as a misleading advertisement?
We could not confirm it. The Press Information Bureau release of 10 June 2022 on the CCPA’s misleading advertisement guidelines does not say whether a sentence on a business’s own service page counts as an advertisement, and we could not open the full text. ASCI, a self-regulatory body, includes communication owned or authorised by the advertiser in its definition. Prove your claims. This is general information, not legal advice.
Will blocking GPTBot stop my business appearing in ChatGPT search?
No. Blocking GPTBot only signals that your content should not be used to train OpenAI’s generative AI foundation models. ChatGPT’s search features rely on a different crawler, OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI says sites opted out of that one will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. A robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to be picked up for search.
Should I write my answers in English or in my customers’ language?
Answer in the language the question arrives in. Our view: write each version natively and never machine-translate a claim you have not checked. Give each language its own page covering the same ten questions. Keep names, addresses and phone numbers identical across versions, and put any disclaimer in the same language as the claim it qualifies.
