AI Marketing
What is AI marketing? A plain answer for Indian small business
Short answer: AI marketing is software that predicts, drafts or replies so marketing work gets done with less manual effort. If you run Google Ads with conversion bidding, you are probably already using it through Smart Bidding. WhatsApp Business now has its own Business AI, rolling out to eligible Indian businesses. For most small businesses the choice that matters is not which tool to buy. It is what you let it answer, and when you step in yourself.
Ask ten people what AI marketing is and you will get ten answers, several of them sales pitches. Here is ours, written for the owner of a shop, clinic, coaching centre or workshop who does not have a marketing department.
In our view, most Indian small businesses should stop thinking of AI marketing as something to go and buy. It is already inside the ad account, and since May 2026 Meta has been rolling it into the WhatsApp Business app. The real decisions are about customer conversations: which ones software answers, in which language, and when a person takes over.
If you want the wider picture first, read our guide to AI marketing for Indian small business. This article is the plain definition and the decisions that follow from it.
Three verbs: predict, draft, reply
We define AI marketing by what the software does. There are three things.
It predicts. It estimates who is likely to buy, or what a click is worth, and adjusts spending to match. You never see it working. You only see the ad account behaving differently.
It drafts. It writes a caption, makes an image or suggests a reply, and a person checks it before it goes out. The human stays in the loop, which makes this the safest of the three.
It replies. It answers a customer directly, without anyone approving each message first. This is the one that changes how a business feels to deal with, for better or worse.
If a tool does none of the three, it is automation with an AI label stuck on. A scheduled message that goes out at 9 am is not AI marketing, however it is described on the pricing page. That is not an insult. Plain automation is often what a business needs. It is just worth knowing what you are paying for.
The AI you switched on without noticing
Many owners are already using the first verb. Google’s help page describes Smart Bidding as “bidding strategies that use Google AI” to improve results for conversions. The strategies it names are Target CPA, Target ROAS, Maximize conversions and Maximize conversion value. Google also says some strategy names change from June 2026. You can read the source on Google Ads Help.
So if your campaigns use any of those, you run AI marketing today. The catch is that it learns from the conversions you report. If your account counts every page view as a conversion, it will happily find you more page views. If it counts real enquiries, calls or orders, it has something worth learning from.
That is a settings question, not a purchase. If your question is which paid tools are worth the money, we cover that separately in which tools are worth paying for.
WhatsApp is where it now talks to your customers
This is the part that is new. Meta announced “Business AI” on WhatsApp for small businesses in India. Its newsroom post is dated 14 May 2026 and was updated on 26 May 2026. You can read it on Meta’s newsroom.
According to Meta, it answers customer questions around the clock, recommends products, captures leads and books appointments, all inside the WhatsApp Business app. It is customised from the business’s own information, such as its catalogue and documents. You switch it on from the Tools tab by selecting “Your Business AI”, with guided steps. The owner can take over a conversation at any time and can turn it off.
Meta also cites a Kantar study (2025) saying 91% of online adults in India chat with a business every week. We would treat that as context from the company selling the feature, not as proof it will work for you.
Three cautions, all from Meta’s own post. It is rolling out gradually to eligible businesses, and the post does not list the eligibility criteria. It does not mention a price. And Meta said UPI payments inside the chat were “starting soon”, so check your app rather than assume they are live.
If you would rather set up lead capture through a third-party provider, we explain how in WhatsApp chatbots for lead capture in India.
Why the language of the reply matters more than the tool
A reply in the language the customer wrote in is the whole point. A fast answer in the wrong language is just a fast way to lose the sale.
Meta says Business AI is available in all native Indian languages. That is a claim about availability. It does not tell you how good the Tamil is, how it handles Hinglish, or what it does with Hindi typed in English letters.
Our advice, not Meta’s: before you let it answer unsupervised, test it yourself. Send it twenty real messages, copied from your own chat history, in the languages your customers actually use. Include the messy ones, with mixed scripts, spelling shortcuts and voice-note style phrasing. Read every answer as the customer would. If it fails in one language, you have learned where a person needs to stay on the chat.
The search side of language is a different job, and we cover it in regional language SEO.
Jobs we would not hand to it yet
This is opinion, and we hold it firmly. For now we would keep these with a person:
- Final price quotes and discounts. Let it share the written price list. Do not let it invent a number or agree a discount that is not written down.
- Complaints and refunds. An upset customer wants to be heard by someone who can decide. A polite automated reply tends to make it worse.
- Anything medical, financial or legal. If a customer asks for advice in those areas, a human with the right training should answer.
- Messages to people who never opted in. Software that replies to someone who messaged you is one thing. Software that starts conversations with people who never asked is a different risk.
None of this is a permanent rule. It is where we would draw the line today, and we would revisit it once you have read a few weeks of real handovers.
A Madurai saree shop’s first month (hypothetical)
This is a hypothetical, built to show the decisions, not the results. We have not invented any outcomes, and you should be wary of anyone who does.
Picture a two-person saree shop in Madurai. Customers write in Tamil and English, usually asking the same things: what is in stock, how long blouse stitching takes, whether returns are possible, and which areas get delivery.
Before anything is switched on, the owner writes things down. She uploads her catalogue. She writes a plain FAQ covering blouse stitching time, the return policy and delivery areas. This is the training material, and it is the step most people skip.
Then she switches on Business AI from the Tools tab, following the guided steps. She tests it with real messages in Tamil and English, including a few written in English letters. Where an answer is wrong, she fixes the FAQ, not the software.
She makes one rule for herself: price negotiation stays with her. Every evening she reads every handover and every conversation the software had, then corrects the written information where it fell short. At the end of the month she decides what to widen, what to narrow and what to turn off. Notice that none of that is technical. It is reading and judgement.
The rules you step into once software holds the conversation
Customer data that passes through any AI tool is still your responsibility. Per law firm summaries we have read, most Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act duties that touch a marketing list come into force from 13 May 2027. Under section 8(1) of the Act, a business remains responsible for processing done on its behalf by a Data Processor. Handing the chat to software does not hand over the obligation. Our write-up of the DPDP Act for marketing goes through what that means in practice.
AI-made images, voices and the rules around labelling them are covered in our guide to AI marketing for Indian small business, so we will not repeat them here. This is not legal advice. If a rule matters to your business, ask a lawyer.
Start now, later, or not at all
Our verdict depends on three things.
Start now if enquiries arrive faster than you can answer them, and your products and prices are already written down. You have the volume and the material. What is missing is only the switch and the habit of reading handovers.
Start later if you have no catalogue or FAQ yet. Write those first. They are the training material, and they are worth having even if you never use AI. Also wait if nobody in the business has time to read the handovers. An unread handover is a customer left hanging.
Not at all, for now, if most of your sales come from walk-ins and phone calls. You do not have a steady flow of written enquiries for software to answer, and the effort is better spent elsewhere.
If you are unsure which group you are in, talk to us about AI automation or ask for a free audit. We will tell you plainly if the answer is not yet.
Frequently asked questions
What does AI marketing mean for a small business in India?
It means software that does one of three jobs: predicts which clicks or customers are worth chasing, drafts copy, images or replies for you to check, or replies to customers by itself. For most small businesses it is not a separate product to buy. It is often already switched on inside Google Ads and is now arriving inside WhatsApp Business. The real decision is what you let it answer.
Am I already using AI marketing if I run Google Ads?
Probably, if you use a conversion-based bidding strategy. Google says Smart Bidding uses Google AI to optimise for conversions, and names Target CPA, Target ROAS, Maximize conversions and Maximize conversion value as examples. It only works as well as the conversions you tell Google about, so check that your account counts real enquiries or sales, not just page visits.
What does Business AI on WhatsApp do?
Per Meta’s announcement for India, it answers customer questions around the clock, recommends products, captures leads and books appointments inside the WhatsApp Business app. It is customised from the business’s own information, such as its catalogue and documents. The owner can take over a conversation at any time and can turn the feature off.
Is Business AI on WhatsApp free?
Meta’s announcement did not mention a price, so we will not guess one. It is also rolling out gradually to eligible businesses, and the post does not list the eligibility criteria. The practical step is to open your own WhatsApp Business app, look at the Tools tab for Your Business AI, and read what it says for your account.
Can AI marketing reply to customers in Tamil, Hindi or other Indian languages?
Meta says Business AI is available in all native Indian languages. That is Meta’s claim, and quality can still vary by language, spelling style and mixed scripts. Our advice is to test it yourself with real messages in the languages your customers actually write in, including Hinglish or Tanglish style mixes, before you let it answer without supervision.
Do I need an agency or a developer to start?
Not for the basics. Meta says setup in the app is guided. What you do need is written product, price and policy information, and someone who reads the handovers each day. An agency helps when you want the replies tied into your ads, a CRM or a website as one system.
